( BW)(CA-JERDE-PARTNERSHIP) Jerde-Designed Kanyon Creates Vibrant,
Urban Experience in Istanbul; Mixed-Use Center First of Two Jerde
Projects to Open in Europe This Year

    LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 31, 2006--The Jerde Partnership,
an internationally acclaimed architecture and urban planning firm,
today announced the grand opening of Kanyon, one of Europe's largest
mixed-use districts. Designed by the firm to create a new concept for
urban living in Istanbul's Levent financial district, Jerde seamlessly
blended the project's modern offices, luxury housing, and local and
upscale retailers with generous open space to create the city's first
open-air center. The design solution, which stands out from the city's
many enclosed centers, was key to helping attract many name-brand
retailers who are new to Turkey. Prior to opening, Kanyon's office,
retail and housing components were fully leased or sold out.
"Our goal with Kanyon was to create a project that would add value
to people's lives and to the surrounding community," said Jon Adams
Jerde, FAIA, founder and chairman of The Jerde Partnership. "For
nearly 30 years, we have had great success designing architecture that
responds to human needs. We are honored to have been given the
extraordinary opportunity to make this contribution to the great city
of Istanbul."
Jerde envisioned the design as a family of bold architectural
shapes that come together to form a dynamic composition. The shapes,
each of which houses a different use, are seamlessly connected by a
600-foot-long, open-air walkway that carves its way through the forms,
creating a dramatic, canyon-like passage with constantly changing
views and perspectives. At the heart of the project, the canyon, which
is lined by four levels of retail and entertainment uses, opens to a
central amphitheater that will host performances and community events.
To enhance the interaction among Kanyon's uses, Jerde designed the
retail podium with open-air concourses; sheathed the 26-level office
tower in transparent glass; and organized the residential tower in an
arcing, terraced pattern that provides many units with balconies and
terraces overlooking the activity below.
"We drew heavily from nature to design Kanyon as a memorable
place. With an open-air design, organic forms, rooftop gardens, park
space and natural elements, Kanyon is unique in Istanbul and will
attract people to gather together in a communal place," said John
Simones, Jerde partner and lead designer of Kanyon. "We are grateful
to our clients for their steadfast commitment to the design vision and
to the many design partners who helped us make it a reality."
The opening of Kanyon represents a significant milestone in
Jerde's expanding European operations, which were formalized when the
firm opened an Amsterdam office last year. In November, Jerde-designed
Zlote Tarasy is expected to open in Warsaw's urban core. The firm is
currently working in Amsterdam, Berlin, Kiev and the United Kingdom.
Kanyon is an equal joint venture between two of Turkey's most
prominent companies, Eczacibasi Holding Company and IS Real Estate &
Investment, a division of Isbank. Jerde designed the project in
collaboration with world-renowned engineering practice Arup and
Turkey's leading architectural practice Tabanlioglu.
